Welcome to our Week 4 of our Fall Session of our Community Supported Fishery (CSF)! This week the Catch of the Week is Atlantic Pollock and our Shellfish Shares and Add on is Scallops!  We also just won a small victory for small boat scallop boats in NH at the New England Fisheries Management Council meeting this past week!

Important things to remember:

  • We buy most of our seafood from small NH day boat fishermen and support our local working waterfront
  • Haddock is all pre-ordered, please do not do a self substitution of your Catch of the Week with haddock, it really messes things up
  • Shellfish is every other week and all Members are invited on the Friday before to purchase for the upcoming Shellfish week

Atlantic Pollock is quickly becoming the new signature New England fish, tasting much like cod and haddock and very abundant. 

Atlantic Pollock is related to cod and haddock and sometimes referred to as "Green cod".  Our Pollock are found in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean and are most common on the western Scotian Shelf and in the Gulf of Maine. A different species of Atlantic Pollock, commonly known as saithe, is found in the Eastern Atlantic.

Atlantic Pollock differs from Cod in that they have a greenish hue and slightly darker flesh. Not to be confused with Alaskan Pollock, found in the Pacific Ocean and one of the most harvested fish in the world. Alaskan Pollock is often times found in frozen fish sticks and fish fillets and a main ingredient in seafood salad and many processed seafood products.

And according to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI), Atlantic Pollock is also one of the five Gulf of Maine fish, that you really can feel good about eating!

Our Fishermen for the week are Captain Jayson Driscoll and his seasoned deckhand, Lucas Raymond of the F/V Witchcraft, our of Rye, NH. Jay has been fishing for most of his life and docks in Rye Harbor and is a mentor to several young fishermen. Also helping out again with this week's catch is F/V Lady Victoria, Captained by Puggy Felch with right hand man, Colin Barnard, out of Seabrook.

Thanks to these hard working fishermen for going 6 hours out and 6 hours back to fishing grounds in the Gulf of Maine, to catch our Pollock this week!

Our Atlantic Pollock has a white, firm flesh with a sweet and delicate flavor. It is low in saturated fat and a great source of B 12 vitamins! It is also very versatile and so easy to cook! 

Pollock is great in fish any blackened recipe (like above on the grill).Substitute it in any recipe that calls for cod or haddock. Click here for some great recipe ideas on our Pinterest Page.
All fish should be cooked according to this rule of thumb: 10 minutes per inch of thickness. Our pollock fillets are about a half to three quarters of an inch, so should be cooked for 5-8 minutes total.
Scallops next week fresh off the boat from Gloucester! Order by Sunday night, using your order form we sent today! 
Scallops come in 20-30 per/lb  and are available in 1lb and 5lb bags! They freeze well too, so you can stock up!
